Kyrra Shipman-Lutz wrestled up, giving up thirty pounds to her competition in this weekend’s SCHSL Girls’ Individual Wrestling State Championship at the Florence Center, and walked away with River Bluff’s first state championship in its women’s wrestling program.

The junior weighed in at 160 and won her way through the 190 weight class, going 2-0 in Friday’s quarter- and semifinals, setting up Saturday’s state championship match against Greenwood’s Heaven Whatley. The final match was fairly even until Shipman-Lutz pinned Whatley with seconds to spare to claim the crown.

Along with earning the state title, Shipman-Lutz also was named to the North-South All-Star team. Joining her on this team are teammates, Sophia Voudouris and Amy Robinson, who both fell in the quarterfinals but wrestled their way all the way back to earn 3rd place finishes overall.

These accomplishments capped off another stellar year for Head Coach Luke Jordan’s women’s wrestling program. In only its second year of existence, the Gators went 26-4, finished third in the state duals championship for the second season in-a-row, produced three All-Stars, a state champion, and is looking to keep moving forward. “We wrestled seven freshmen on our team this year. Our upper classmen led the way this season and our freshmen stepped up and earned starting spots. I’m looking forward to next season already,” said Coach Jordan.
