There must be something about teams that begin with "G" and have eagles as mascots.
After winning two in a row at the Impact Sports Showcase in Spartanburg before Thanksgiving, the River Bluff Gators women's basketball team lost two games in the She Got Next Thanksgiving Classic, held at Lexington High School on Friday and Saturday.
The Gators fell to a tough Gray Collegiate team on Friday, 60-43. Despite three Gators scoring in double digits - Chaelyn Tifre (13), Evie Godfrey (12), and Campbell Childress (11) - the War Eagles' offense proved too much, led by one of the tourney's standout players and Westwood transfer Aneya Britt, who had 30 points to lead all scorers. A big second quarter, in which Gray outscored River Bluff by nine, helped the Eagles pull out the win. Only eight points separated the two teams over the other three quarters combined.
Then, on Saturday, River Bluff lost its halftime lead over Greenwood in the third quarter and could never recover, falling to the Eagles, 38-29. It was the fewest points scored by the Gators this season. Evie Godfrey led the Gators with 11 points while Jenna Johnson hauled in nine rebounds. Turnovers plagued River Bluff, though, losing the ball 26 times, resulting in 20 points for Greenwood.
River Bluff (2-2) will host Brookland-Cayce on Tuesday, December 2, in its first home game of the season. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity men's team.
