A single run in the last inning on Friday night was all that was needed for the visiting Sumter Gamecocks to knock the River Bluff Gators out of the District Four Lower State Bracket of the SCHSL AAAAA-Division I Playoffs.
The game was dominated from the circle by both teams. Sumter's Lillie Ivey pitched all seven scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and striking out thirteen. Gator starter Alexis Jodie also went the distance and also gave up just two hits. The senior struck out seven Lady Gamecock batters.
As the game entered the seventh, and final, inning, the scoreboard showed nothing but zeroes under the six previous inning columns. Neither team had seemed to be able to make solid contact very often, as both pitchers were dealing impressively all game. Then, Sumter's leadoff in the seventh, Bailey Ardis, laid down a perfect bunt single. Then, the next batter, Ivy King bunted and ended up on first, pushing Ardis to second. Sophia Rivers followed suit. Three bunts - three base runners. Swinging the bats had not produced what they wanted, so it appeared Sumter decided to play ultra small ball and bunt their way home.
The plan worked.
With bases loaded and no outs, McKenzi Pearson reached first on a fly ball, scoring Ardis. The first and, ultimately, only run of the game.
The Gators got out of the inning, just allowing one run with runners in scoring position. They could not muster any runs of their own, however, ending on a fly out and two strikeouts.
The 1-0 loss to Sumter was River Bluff's second loss in this postseason, ending a incredibly successful run for the 2026 campaign, which saw the Gators finish second in the region at 8-2 and 17-11 overall. The Gators entered the playoffs with a 16-9 regular season record, earning them a number seven seed.
