River Bluff didn’t need luck on Tuesday night against White Knoll.
On a festive St. Patrick’s Day night in The Swamp, the Gators opened region play in dominant fashion, rolling past the Timberwolves 7-0 behind a complete team performance on both sides of the ball.
The scoring started early and set the tone. In the 21st minute, senior captain Wade Douroux found the back of the net off an assist from fellow senior Alejandro Romero, giving River Bluff a 1-0 advantage.
Twelve minutes later, the Gators struck again. Junior Mason Swann delivered a ball into the box to sophomore Henry Kuhn, who finished cleanly to double the lead to 2-0.
Kuhn wasn’t done.
In the 37th minute, junior Jake Riddle’s diving header was redirected into the net, giving Kuhn his second goal, and Riddle an assist, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Just before halftime, senior midfielder Chris Gartung added a highlight moment. Spinning back toward the center of the field, Gartung unleashed a left-footed strike that found the net in the 39th minute, sending the Gators into the break with a commanding 4-0 lead.
River Bluff carried that momentum into the second half. In the 50th minute, Romero added his name to the scoresheet, ripping a shot to extend the lead to 5-0.
Riddle joined the scoring shortly after. Swann located the junior midfielder who took a touch, drove to his left and launched a left-footed effort from 30 yards out that redirected off a White Knoll defender and into the net, making it 6-0.
The final exclamation point came in the 72nd minute, when junior Paul Herron scored his first career goal as the Timberwolves attempted to clear the ball out of the box. Herron ran onto it and ripped a shot low through the defense to cap off the 7-0 performance.
Beyond the offensive output, River Bluff showcased its depth. The Gators played all available athletes, and all four goalkeepers combined to secure the clean sheet.
A statement win to open region play and one that made it clear this group is built on more than just luck.
The Gators are back in action on Friday as they host Irmo in The Swamp.
