River Bluff wasted no time making a statement in Game 2 of the Capital City Cup on Thursday night in The Swamp.

Just one minute into action, senior Ayden Bazemore sparked the attack, finding sophomore Henry Kuhn, who ripped a one-touch stinger into the far right corner to give the Gators an immediate 1-0 lead. The early strike set the tone, but Christ Church settled in, and the two sides battled evenly through the remainder of the first half.

The Cavaliers answered in the second half after a steal deep in Gator territory led to a quick equalizer, knotting the match at 1-1 and setting up a dramatic finish.

Late-game tension defined the final minutes.

In the 77th minute, Christ Church nearly grabbed the lead, but a shot on frame glanced off the far post and bounced out — a massive break for the Gators. Just 40 seconds later, River Bluff flipped the momentum.

Two seniors delivered in the decisive moment. Holden Carruthers played a ball forward toward midfield that found Wade Douroux, who carried it down the left side into the box. Douroux was taken down and awarded a penalty kick. The senior forward stepped up and calmly knocked home the PK, sealing the 2-1 victory.
