River Bluff opened the 2026 regular season Tuesday night in the Capital City Cup with a tough 1-0 loss to Legion Collegiate Academy, but the Gators once again showed the defensive identity that carried them through a challenging preseason slate.

The lone goal of the match came in the 26th minute in an unfortunate sequence for River Bluff. Senior goalkeeper Zach Stiles fielded a ball played back into the defensive third and attempted to clear it upfield, but a well-timed deflection from a pressing Legion forward redirected the ball back toward goal and into the net, giving the Lancers an early 1-0 advantage.

Despite the setback, the Gators settled in and continued to defend at a high level, limiting Legion’s chances for the remainder of the contest while battling to find an equalizer.

River Bluff’s best opportunities came at the very beginning and the closing stages of the match.

In the 8th minute, junior center back Mason Kleine nearly gave the Gators the lead when he struck a dangerous free kick that curled toward the upper-right corner but ended just wide of the frame.

The Gators’ most threatening chance came late in the second half. In the 72nd minute, senior captain Wade Douroux delivered a perfectly placed corner kick. Junior Mason Swann went up for it and drove a header into the ground, on frame, but the well-positioned Legion goalkeeper was able to make the save and preserve the shutout.

River Bluff’s defensive consistency has been a clear bright spot dating back to the preseason, when the Gators opened with a 1-0 win over Nation Ford, followed by a scoreless draw against Ashley Ridge, and later battled Wando to a 1-1 tie. Tuesday’s match against Legion continued that trend.

Now sitting at 0-1 on the young season, River Bluff won’t have to wait long for another opportunity. The Gators return to action Thursday at 5:00 p.m. when they host Christ Church in the Capital City Cup.
