The River Bluff men’s varsity basketball team’s season thus far has been nothing short of taxing, and their record reflects it. The Gators head into region play this Friday with a 1-14 record.
The last time River Bluff had a losing record before beginning region games was the 2022-23 season, when the Gators were 6-10 through their non-region schedule. That year, River Bluff finished 6-2 in region play and were region runners-up. They followed that by going three games deep into the Lower State playoffs and finishing at .500 with a 14-14 overall record.
Head Coach Ben Lee and his Gators are hoping for a similar 180-degree swing in the second part of their season this year.
“We have played a very challenging pre-region schedule,” says Coach Lee. There’s a method to the madness in scheduling formidable out-of-region opponents, though. “Those tough games have prepared us for the battles that come along with playing in our region,” he adds.
Region IV-AAAAA is a traditionally strong region in virtually all sports, and that includes men’s basketball. Region members Irmo, Dutch Fork, and Lexington are past state champs and consistently play themselves deep into the postseason, reaching the championship game multiple times. River Bluff can claim the same, albeit over a much shorter time period. White Knoll and Chapin round out the region with a high level of playoff-worthy athleticism and competitiveness. Any region matchup can be a highly contested affair, often producing classic, heart-stopping outcomes. Each outing is a battle.
When preparing for the region portion of the schedule, Coach Lee admits that their approach is a little different. “Region games are very intense.  So much is riding on your success in region play.  We start to really deep dive once we get into region play.”
Historically, as seasons progress, Coach Lee seems to be a master of getting the most from his squad, often finishing with a team that looks quite unlike the one that started the season. Whether or not that holds true for this particular team in this particular season remains to be seen. Nevertheless, Coach Lee’s objective for the Gators is simple: “Our goal is to improve each game and continue to build toward the future.”
River Bluff travels to White Knoll on Friday night to face the Timberwolves in their first region game of the season. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
