River Bluff's varsity football team entered Friday night's game at Chapin 0-2 in region play after two deflating defeats against White Knoll and Irmo, both highly ranked 5A teams. The Gators were in need of a victory.
After a total team effort, a victory is just what the Gators got.
Offensively, River Bluff tailback Hayden Myers made the most of his return after missing the last game due to injury by rambling off 232 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. Freshman Davis Taylor earned the starting role for Friday night's contest and responded by tossing two touchdown passes and going 12-for-22 for 149 yards in the air. Darius Carter was in the receiving end of both of those TD throws, leading River Bluff receivers with six catches for 64 yards.
Defensively, the Gators kept Chapin out of the endzone until late in the third quarter, when Eagle quarterback Cooper Derrick connected with Jack Coleman for a 74-yard touchdown pass. That would be the only points allwed, however. Nick Washington, who recently moved from receiver to defensive back, snagged two interceptions to lead the Gators. The River Bluff defense held Chapin to 263 total yards.
The win ups River Bluff's record to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in Region 4-AAAAA. The Gators are hoping to ride the momentum that comes from a big win into Dutch Fork on Friday for their game against the Silver Foxes. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
