If only.
If only certain key stat lines could determine a winner.
If only offensive scores counted.
If only the fourth quarter were indicative of the entire game.
There are plenty of “if only’s” that might have given the Gators a different outcome in Friday night’s season opener at Rock Hill. Football results are not based on fragments of the contest, specifically hand-picked to benefit the team of choice, however. They are, rather, the end product of all the pieces and parts that make up a high school football game.
Because of that, the first game of the 2025 season for River Bluff ended in a 31-18 loss to the Bearcats of Rock Hill.
Big plays, check that - massive plays made the difference in the game. Rock Hill scored a touchdown on a Donovan Franklin interception of Gator quarterback Brayden Moore early in the Gators’ very first offensive series. Chalk one up for the Bearcat defense.
Then, in the waning seconds of the first quarter, River Bluff’s defense had Rock Hill facing a difficult third-down, pinned deep in their own territory, when Bearcat quarterback Jonah Young found Kameron Wilson, who took the pass and sprinted 91 yards for their second touchdown. Massive play number two.
River Bluff finally got on the board in the second quarter on an impressive 39-yard field goal by Liam Flynn. Any momentum that might have been swinging back in favor of the Gators, though, disappeared behind on the heels of Rock Hill’s Jojo Brooks, who returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for the score. Massive play number three, and possibly backbreaking for the Gators.
As the clock expired on the first half of play, Rock Hill’s kicker James Heckard converted a 42-yard field goal to give the Bearcats a commanding 24-3 lead. If not a massive play, certainly an impressive one.
So, the first half featured three touchdowns for Rock Hill - one by the defense, one by special teams, and one by the offense - and a field goal.
The halftime speech by Rock Hill’s head coach Leon Boulware might have gone something like this: “Guys, we are winning this game because of massive plays. Let’s keep that up,” because they received the opening kick of the second half and on their first play from scrimmage scored on a 92-yard run by Marvin Randolph - yet another massive play. Three of their four touchdown plays averaged 88 yards. The fourth was an interception return.
To the Gators’ credit, despite knockout blow after knockout blow, they never threw in the towel. In fact, Brayden Moore hit Darius Carter twice, scoring two touchdowns, bringing River Bluff to within a couple of scores of Rock Hill midway through the final period. The massive play mountain built by the Bearcats, however, proved to be a little too high a climb for the Gators.
River Bluff actually led in first downs 20-9, had fewer penalty yards (3-for-20 vs 12-for-122), and possessed the ball nearly three minutes longer than their opponent. Total yardage was close - 375-322 in favor of Rock Hill. All positives the Gators can build upon, and building is what new head coach Perry Parks and his staff are doing with their program. The team is incredibly young with very few starters returning from last year’s successful playoff squad. Knowing Coach Parks' work ethic and expectations of his players, it is safe to say that the amount of massive plays allowed could very well dramatically decrease over the next few weeks, which should result in better outcomes for the Gators without mentioning the “only if’s”.
