Baseball: Gators Down Sumter 6-5 in Gamecock City Invitational, Fall to Chapin on Tuesday

River Bluff snapped an eight-game win streak on Tuesday at Chapin, falling to the Eagles 2-0. Prior to that, River Bluff defeated Sumter 6-5 on Saturday at the Gamecock City Invitational at Riley Field in Sumter.

After falling behind 2-1 in the first inning at Sumter, River Bluff scored two runs in teh third and three in the fourth to go up 6-2. The Gamecocks responded in their half of the fourth with a couple of runs to get within two, 6-4. Then, Sumter added one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but that was all the Gators would allow, securing a 6-5 win.

Ashley Powell earned the win, starting the game for the Gators and going 3 full innings, giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits, striking out 4.
Peyton Hewitt came on in relief and picked up the save, surrendering 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 6.

On Tuesday, River Bluff returned to region play at Chapin and lost their first region game of the year 2-0. The pitchers duel was fairly even everywhere but in the final score column. The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Chapin scored twice. accounting for the only runs of the game. The Eagles outhit the gators by one 6-5.

Starter Dalton Corley pitched five scoreless innings, but gave up two runs in the sixth. Corley gave up 6 hits and struck out 7. Peyton Hewitt came on in relief and got the final three outs with no hits and 1 strikeout.
